Pregnancy & Postpartum Counseling: Frequently Asked Questions
What is perinatal counseling?
Perinatal counseling provides mental health support to individuals during pregnancy and the first year postpartum, focusing on emotional well-being.
What does perinatal mental health include?
It covers biological, emotional, and psychological health issues during pregnancy and after childbirth, such as depression, anxiety, and mood changes.
Who should I expect for my first perinatal counseling appointment?
Expect to meet a therapist who specializes in perinatal mental health, ready to discuss your experiences and concerns related to pregnancy or postpartum life.
What are Perinatal Mood & Anxiety Disorders (PMADs)?
PMADs are a range of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders that can occur during pregnancy or in the postpartum period.
Can I bring my infant/young child to my counseling sessions with me?
Unless therapeutically warranted, it is ideal for you to attend sessions without your children. This allows for better focus in session and freedom to explore issues with genuine language. However, we never want a lack of childcare to be an obstacle to healing and support. Clients are welcome to bring infants to sessions if childcare is not available or if not bringing them poses emotional or logistical inconvenience to the parent.
